How do you discover new authors?

To help me plan my book promotion campaign I’d love to know how do you all choose the books that you read? Where do you buy them and what influences your choices? When do you try new authors?

From my facebook page these great comments have been made:

    Sue:
Sometimes recommendation, or a favourite author. I used to read book reviews for new books (long time ago!) but now it’s what catches my eye at the library. With new and untried, I’ll always give them a go … go by the cover and description and read the first couple of pages. Also read Amazon reader reviews but more often after I’ve read or started the book.

By recommendation or by the cover, as weird as that sounds. I like a nice girly cover that pulls me in – then I’d read the back and if it sounds good I’d buy it. I got one the other day though just cos it said ‘as good as Sophie Kinsella or your money back’ 🙂

Hmmm, sometimes read a review in a magazine, more often or not a good eye catching girly front cover, then I’ll read the back cover and decide if I fancy it or not. x

I always go by book cover and by what I read on the back

Friend’s recommendations, those promoted in magazines, eye catching covers in supermarkets….those you know the author of!!!

Most of the books I read, I buy from bookshops so typically its the cover (and the thickness) of the book that will attract me. I will then read the blurb, and if still not sure might dip into the book and skim read a couple of pages – I may even then leave it, go and browse elsewhere and come back !!

I do use Amazons ‘Recommended for you’ … See moresometimes – and bought a new book based on that last week (new author for me, 2nd book for the author). It was still ultimately the blurb and cover that really sold it to me tho – although I did read the readers reviews.

I will buy (occasionally) based on review – not so much a review of the book, but article (newspaper or radio) that mentions authors / books that are like ones that I have already read and enjoyed. Ironically, I went to look at the book that Olympia mentioned yesterday that was like an early Martina Cole – but I read the blurb and decided no !!

I read the first couple of pages in the shop. If I want to read the third page, I buy the book! x
